In the end, it was all about a classless Newt Gingrich, pouting at his Florida HQ. This is why he would be such a poor choice for the party, the nation and conservatives.
As of 3:10 PM PST, in my part of the country, Drudge is reporting these numbers from early exit polls. He reports that according to the exit polling, Romney is up by 14 points over Gingrich and he has a 2 point lead over a combined Gingrich, Santorum reported vote total. If you can believe the ever hapless Newt these days, he would have you think that if only Santorum would leave the race, he would be well on his way. Newt probably forgot to note that a significant share of Santorum voters would probably not just move over to the Gingrich column. In the past week, Newt has definitely created even more baggage for himself with his silliness. The race may not be over but Gingrich is definitely off the well beaten path and headed for the cliff. Stay tuned.
Here is the delegate count prior to tonight’s final results. Florida has 50 delegates at stake with this winner take all primary. Florida has opted to surrender 49 delegates by moving up their primary in spite of strong RNC objections. Their gamble just might be worth the loss as it is going to resounding for the Romney campaign if the numbers continue like through the evening.
